A free SimilarWeb alternative for your own traffic (and where it isn't one)

People reach for SimilarWeb to answer two very different questions, and it is only honest at one of them. The first is "how much traffic does that site I don't own get?" The second is "how much traffic does my site get?" For your own site there is a free, exact alternative, and this post is about when to switch to it.

How SimilarWeb actually gets its number

SimilarWeb does not see your server logs or your analytics. It estimates traffic by modelling a clickstream panel - browsing data from browser extensions, apps and partner devices - then extrapolating to the whole internet with a lot of statistical machinery. For huge sites with millions of visits, that model is directional and often close. For the long tail, where almost every indie and early-stage SaaS site lives, the panel barely samples you, so the number is a guess dressed as a measurement. That is why founders routinely see SimilarWeb report a figure that is off by 30-80% in either direction from what they know is true.

The alternative for your own site: your measured clicks

For the site you own, you do not need an estimate at all. Google Search Console records your actual organic clicks, and connecting it (read-only) gives you the exact number instead of a modelled one.
